Professor Laurent Serge ETOUNDI NGOA, Minister of Basic Education, chaired on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, in the conference room of his ministerial department, the first orientation meeting on the organization of the celebration of the 58th edition of International Literacy Day scheduled for September 9 and 10 in Yaoundé. In his opening remarks, the Minister of Basic Education recalled the framework of this international meeting which requires co-organization with UNESCO, which is responsible for the technical aspect. It is therefore a question of setting up an organization that will supervise the preparations for the ceremony, for which several exchange meetings have already taken place. The work focused mainly on: the background of the activities carried out from June to date; the memorandum of understanding signed between CAMEROON and UNESCO.
On the occasion, the Minister emphasized the importance of this celebration which will be attended at all stages by the First Lady, “UNESCO Ambassador”, the Director General of UNESCO and several high-ranking officials from the various participating countries. From the work already done, it is noted that these meetings will take place at the Palais des Congrès, that this ceremony will be grafted onto another international meeting: the Global Education Partnership meeting. Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, while congratulating Madam Director of Literacy, also urged the various sectoral ministries to get to work each in their areas of competence. He requested that technical commissions be set up and tasks broken down by commission. Finally, the Minister of Basic Education invited everyone to mobilize in order to meet the challenge that awaits them.
